Birth Wise - Promoting Natural Birth
Promoting Natural Birth

Birth Wise promotes wellness in pregnancy, natural birth and holistic parenting by empowering women and men to make infomed choices.

Birth Wise (Wgtn) Incorporated was formed by parents for parents approximately 16 years ago. It was originally set up (with encouragement from Domino Midwives) as a lobbying and advocacy group for natural birth. After a year, Birth Wise began offering an antenatal programme, from which the current courses emerged.  We are proud to have been providing courses to over 700 prospective parents since this time.

The focus of  Birth Wise today is our Childbirth & Early Parenting Course although we are still actively involved in lobbying and consumer representation.

Birth Wise is a voluntary organisation which currently receives some funding from a COGS (Community Organisation Grant Scheme) grant.

Birth Wise is an association which:

  • provides information by way of a Childbirth & Early Parenting Course that helps parents make informed, natural birth choices;
  • supports natural birth choices;
  • recognises each birth as a unique experience; and
  • provides parents and caregivers with ongoing support through two Birth Wise-organised reunions, coffee mornings and committee involvement where desired.

Birth Wise supports:

  • informed pregnancy, birth and after-care choices;
  • home birth;
  • 'Domino birth', that is, continuity of care with the option of early discharge from hospital within 2-3 hours (70% of women);
  • midwife-only care; and
  • shared care from midwife and general practitioner or specialist.

Birth Wise also supports the Wellington Home Birth Association (WHBA).  If you wish to join the WHBA membership costs $30.00. (Birth Wise will forward this on to WHBA on your behalf.)

Birth Wise is based in Wellington, New Zealand.
